Directly supporting $1 billion in income and over 25,000 jobs in 2020, New Mexico’s outdoor industry continues to grow quickly. During the pandemic, outdoor recreation businesses showed great resilience and saw major boosts in customers, with nearly half of U.S. adults participating in outdoor activities at least monthly. The last two years were not without challenges though, especially for those in rural areas whose business models relied on location-based marketing: billboards, word-of-mouth, road-trippers passing through.
“When we’re working one-on-one with New Mexico outdoor businesses, the number-one question we hear most frequently is: How do I boost my marketing efforts with my current team?” said Axie Navas, ORD director. “Thanks to the partnership with Creative Startups and Sandoval County, this free marketing workbook and online training are now part of the answer.”
The ORD works to ensure that all New Mexicans gain from the public health, environmental, and economic benefits of sustainable outdoor recreation, aiming to achieve positive, measurable impacts within economic development, conservation, education and public health. One of the office’s top priorities is supporting the small businesses that power this economy, making them the perfect collaborator for Creative Startups in impacting these businesses and communities.
Through their partnership with the ORD and Sandoval County, Creative Startups has had the opportunity to work with several creative outdoor recreation startups, most recently offering a three-week Mastering Marketing Intensive and generating new video-based content for several Sandoval County based businesses. These new resources represent Creative Startup’s goal to continue this important work in an essential sector of New Mexico’s economy.
“New Mexico's outdoor recreation businesses offer visitors an unparalleled suite of outdoor experiences and products,” said Creative Startups CEO Alice Loy. “Investing in their success is a no-brainer and protects our recreation resources for future generations while building income for families.”
